American magazine covers can be such a bore. It's the same formula on repeat: insert celebrity (photoshopped of course), fake smile, eye-catching accessories, three or so simple typefaces with a number thrown on the page to boost newsstand sales, and POOF. Magic? I say, SNORE. I much prefer European magazines' riskier and more creative approach to winning over the newsstand. Head over to England or Paris and you'll see more models on the cover in more interesting poses and settings, bolder, fancier typefaces, and color combinations that don't really make sense but make your eyes happy. For Vogue Australia's 50th Anniversary issue, however, they took the classic celebrity cover in a new direction. Cate Blanchett graces the cover--well, at least a fashion illustrated version of her does. And I have to say it's not only refreshing, but the result is stunning as well! In addition, they've added a beautiful scripted font that is cause for celebration itself. It's a little bit of old mixed in with the new, a collector's item without a doubt. Now if only we could see what's inside!
